Gopher mounds are crescent- or horseshoe-shaped when viewed from above, with the burrow plug off to one side. Mole mounds are more circular and volcano-shaped with a center plug. That shape difference is the clearest way to tell the two apart. A single active gopher can push up several fresh mounds in a day, and dark, moist soil is a sign the tunneling is still ongoing.

The damage goes beyond cosmetic. Gophers gnaw flexible plastic irrigation lines, and their tunnels can redirect water flow and accelerate soil erosion. Mounds scattered across a lawn also catch mower blades and strip turfgrass unevenly. The longer activity continues, the more this damage accumulates.

Pocket Gophers in the Sacramento Valley

The pocket gopher gets its name from the fur-lined external cheek pouches it uses to carry food and nesting material. Botta’s pocket gopher is the most widespread of the five species found in California and the one most Sacramento homeowners are dealing with. Adults typically measure 6 to 10 inches long, including the tail.

One animal is usually responsible for all the mounds appearing across a yard. Pocket gophers are solitary and territorial, each maintaining its own burrow system that can extend across 200 to 2,000 square feet, with feeding tunnels running 6 to 12 inches below the surface. They don’t hibernate, so the problem won’t resolve on its own come winter.

Irrigated yards and gardens create near-ideal conditions year-round. Consistently moist, workable soil means easy digging, and with steady food and water available, local populations can produce up to three litters per year. That’s why properties with established irrigation systems often see persistent or recurring activity.

Gopher Control Methods That Work

California’s Fish and Game Code classifies pocket gophers as nongame mammals, and no trapping license is required for their removal. The methods that consistently perform are trapping, underground exclusion barriers, and regulated underground baiting.

Trapping uses pincer-style or box-style traps set directly in the main burrow. It’s considered one of the safest and most effective approaches for residential properties.
Underground exclusion barriers made of hardware cloth or wire mesh, buried at least two feet deep, protect individual beds, trees, or plantings from future damage. These are a practical option when you want to safeguard specific areas long-term.
Regulated underground baiting places toxic material directly inside the burrow system. Above-ground bait application is illegal in California and hazardous to pets and wildlife, so placement should be handled by someone who knows the system.
Repellents and frightening devices, including castor bean plants, garlic, and vibrating ground stakes, haven’t demonstrated reliable effectiveness in controlled research trials. We don’t recommend spending time on approaches that tend to disappoint.
