Mice vs Rats: How to Tell the Difference

They can squeeze through tiny gaps and often nest inside walls, attics, or storage areas. Rats are larger (7–10 inches or more), with thicker bodies and smaller ears relative to their size. They may burrow closer to the ground or climb into elevated spaces, depending on the species.

Behavioral signs also differ; mice leave smaller droppings and gnaw marks, and they can be active during both day and night. Rats produce larger droppings, follow predictable travel paths, and often have more noticeable burrows.
